KaiScience Announces Cleaning Industry Advisors (CIA) Group

 

 

KaiScience has announced the formation of the Cleaning Industry Advisors (CIA); an elite group of industry veterans and experts assembled to provide input on the development of cleaning processes that produce better, healthier and synergistic results as confirmed by scientific measurement. The CIA group, part of the KaiScience Advisory Board, includes:

Alan Bigger

Alan Bigger is Director of Facilities at Earlham College, Richmond, IN, President of APPA (Leadership in Educational Facilities), and a Registered Executive Housekeeper (REH) with the International Executive Housekeepers Association (IEHA). Prior to Earlham College, he was the Director of Building Services at the University of Notre Dame. Alan served two terms on the Technical Advisory Committee of the IEHA, and helped compile IEHA’s Frontline Training Program (1998). He contributed to two APPA books, Hazardous Materials and Solid Waste Management (1992), and Custodial Staffing Guidelines (1992). He has published over 335 articles in various trade journals, and written more than 100 articles for the Frugal Housekeeper column in Executive Housekeeping Today. He has spoken at many conferences both regionally and nationally, throughout the United States. His newest book is Frugalisms: Creative Ideas on Leadership in Facilities and Housekeeping Operations, published by IEHA in December, 2007.

Brent Bourne
Brent Bourne is President of Servitech Training Ltd., Victoria BC, Canada.
He is a consultant and trainer for government, school districts, hospitals, airports, major industrial facilities, Corrections Canada, and First Nations groups in British Columbia. Since 1998, he has been a college instructor specializing in building service worker (BSW) health and safety training. Brent is a national presenter at trade and professional conferences, and vocational instructor on building maintenance, motivational and supervisory topics. He has performed Cleaning Audits, Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) investigations, and is qualified in Biohazard Remediation, Work Safe, WHMIS, Blood borne Pathogen Safety, Sharps Safety, Ladder Safety, Musculoskeletal Injury safety, Slip Fall Investigation and Remediation. He is a Resilient Floor Inspector for the Canadian Flooring Inspector Association, IICRC, and trainer for Cleaning Management Institute (CMI). Brent is the author of several college level manuals dealing with the building services.

Colin Butterfield
Colin Butterfield is President of Yoredale Consulting Ltd., Victoria BC, Canada. He is a Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS) Certified Assessor, and has been involved in the building service industry for more than 25 years. Colin is an editorial contributor to trade publications across North America, author of several cleaning industry training manuals, a presenter at facility management conferences (CSSA, PCAPPA, IFMA, WCUPPA, SPOA BC), host of a major cleaning trade show in Western Canada, and developer of software tools for cleaning management. His consulting services include quality audits and operational surveys for public institutions, and developing self-paced training tools, particularly in the area of "due diligence" (hantavirus avoidance, chemical safety training, absence management, etc.)

Vince Elliott
Vince Elliott is the President and CEO of Elliott Affiliates, Ltd. of Baltimore, MD. He is widely recognized as a leading authority in the design and utilization of performance-based management techniques and continuous improvement systems for cleaning and facilities outsourcing. Vince is a member of the Association for Quality and Participation (AQP); the American Society for Quality (ASQ), where he is a past chairman of the Facilities Management Quality Control Committee; and a member of the Cleaning Management Institute (CMI). He is also a member of the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA), the Building Owners & Managers Association (BOMA), CoreNet Global, International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA), and (NCMA) National Contract Management Association.

Bill Griffin
Bill Griffin, President of Cleaning Consultant Services, Inc., Seattle, WA, has over 30 years of experience in the cleaning industry as a consultant and educator. He is the author of the Comprehensive Custodial Training Manual, How to Sell and Price Contract Cleaning, How to Start and Operate a Successful Cleaning Business, other books and manuals, as well as hundreds of articles regarding cleaning, maintenance and self-employment. He is a frequent speaker and seminar leader at cleaning industry trade shows and conventions worldwide. Bill is certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) as a Master Cleaner, and is an active carpet and hard surface flooring inspector, and approved IICRC instructor for carpet (CCT & CMT), stone (SMT) and hard floors (FCT). He is also President of the International Custodial Advisors Network (ICAN).

 

David Holly
David Holly is co-founder and Chancellor of Green Cleaning University. A member of the Ashkin Group, David provides consulting services for companies that are developing or expanding their green cleaning programs. He has served the cleaning industry for almost 30 years, and has been involved in virtually every facet of the business. He was vice-president of a regional building service contractor, Director of Sales and Marketing for S.C. Johnson Professional, and Director of Marketing for Multi-Clean. David is also President of Don't Panic Productions, Inc., a new media development company that produces marketing and training material for companies in the cleaning industry. He is a frequent speaker at conferences in the United States as well as internationally and devotes the majority of his time to green cleaning issues.

 

Michael Lindsey
Michael Lindsay is a Certified Executive Housekeeper (CEH) with the International Executive Housekeepers Association (IEHA) and a member of the Information and Resource Committee, and Triad Chapter president. Michael is a Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Professional (CHESP) with the American Hospital Association (AHA) and a member of American Society of Healthcare Environmental Services (ASHES). He is also a member of the International Custodial Advisors Network (ICAN) and the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA). Michael developed a version of Team Cleaning for the hospitality industry, and has written a book on Hospitality Team Cleaning that complements his seminars. He is currently developing a program on Team Cleaning for Health, as well as programs on budget processes, cleaning for reduction of communicable diseases, and change management. Michael is Co-Founder of Cleanology 911.

Rex Morrison
Rex Morrison is the Housekeeping Training Supervisor of Washoe County Public Schools, Reno NV, the second largest school district in Nevada with approximately 94 schools, 60,000 students and 6,600 employees. In 1999, he developed Process Cleaning, a management-based Team Cleaning system set in a zone environment with emphasis on cleaning schools for health. Process Cleaning is being used in many schools and universities around the U.S. and Canada. Rex was named 1999 Nevada State Custodian of the year, 2002 CMI Custodial Supervisor of the year, and received the 2005 State of Nevada Cashman Good Government Award from the Nevada Taxpayers Association.

The KaiScience Advisory Board includes:


Charlene Bayer, PhD

 

Dr. Charlene Bayer is Principal Research Scientist and Leader of the Environmental Exposures and Analysis Group at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) and Director of Georgia Institute of Technology's Indoor Environment Research Program. GTRI is the nonprofit applied research arm of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA. The Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the nation's top research universities, distinguished by its commitment to improving the human condition through advanced science and technology.

 

She has authored more than 100 publications and presentations in various aspects of the indoor environment. She has investigated the indoor environment in more than 80 buildings and is an expert in environmental chamber research. Much of her research has related to measuring and understanding airborne exposures’ impact on asthma and other diseases including the development of sensor systems for personal exposure measurements. She is leading a Green Schools Program for the State of Georgia.

 

Paul S. Darby, MD, PhD, MPH

 

Dr. Paul S. Darby graduated from Furman University with a B.S. in Chemistry in 1981 and went on to earn a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at the University of Georgia. He served in the U.S. Army as a Clinical Chemist before attending medical school on an Army scholarship. He received his M.D. from Georgetown University in 1993 and completed a clinical internship at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA. He served as a staff Emergency Medicine physician at a level II trauma center and as a staff Family Practice physician at various Army hospitals around the world.

 

He left the active Army in 2000 to pursue civilian residency training at the University of Washington, where he also earned his Master of Public Health degree in Occupational Health. He is board-certified in Occupational and Environmental Medicine and is in full-time practice in a major seaport, specializing in acute industrial trauma, chemically-related illness, and maritime medicine.

 

He has a particular interest in the chemistry and toxicology of household products, and in encouraging the development of safe, practical, and environmentally-responsible cleaning agents. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the Army National Guard.

 

He is a Senior FAA Aviation Medical Examiner, a Certified Medical Review Officer, a Certified Independent Medical Examiner, and a Fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He is on the clinical faculty of two departments at the University of Washington: the Department of Family Medicine (School of Medicine) and the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences (School of Public Health). He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American College of Clinical Toxicology, the Washington State Medical Association, and the Pierce County Medical Society. He maintains an active consulting practice in medicinal chemistry and biotechnology through his company MD_PhD Services, PLLC.

 

Robert Donofrio, MS, NSF International Microbiologist

 

Robert Donofrio is the Director of the Microbiology and Molecular Biology Lab of NSF International. His expertise embraces microbiology, laboratory design, management and technical operations, biotechnology and nanotoxicology. Donofrio's professional experience includes positions as Lead Microbiologist, BioRemedial Technologies; Adjunct Professor of Microbiology, Penn State University; Adjunct Professor of Biotechnology, Kent State University; Member of the Institute for Food Technology, the American Society of Microbiology, and the Society for Industrial Microbiology, where he has served as a session convener and chair. He has made frequent media appearances, including Good Morning America and National Public Radio, and has been quoted numerous times in trade journals and magazines.

 

Charles P. Gerba, PhD

 

Charles P. Gerba, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized environmental microbiologist and Professor of Environmental Microbiology in the Departments of Microbiology and Immunology, and Soil, Water and Environmental Science, at the University of Arizona. His credentials include a B.A. in Microbiology, Arizona State University, 1969, and a Ph.D. in Microbiology, University of Miami, Florida, 1973. He is also a member of the American Academy of Microbiology.

Dr. Gerba has authored more than 400 articles including several text books in environmental microbiology and pollution science. He actively conducts research on the development of new disinfectants and drinking water treatment processes, new methods for the detection of pathogens, and microbial risk assessment. He was a member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Committee on the development of the "Guide Standard and Protocol for Testing Microbiological Water Purifiers," which forms the basis for testing the performance of water treatment devices used for outdoor recreation. He is a member of the U.S. EPA's Science Advisory Board Committees on Drinking Water and Research Strategies.

The public knows Dr. Gerba best for his crusading on behalf of household hygiene. He has made frequent media appearances, including Good Morning America, Today, and Dateline, and has been quoted numerous times in international and national reports, magazines and newspapers.

Jay Glasel, PhD

 

Dr. Glasel is the Managing Member and Founder of Global Scientific Consulting, LLC. He is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Microbial, Molecular and Structural Biology at the University of Connecticut Medical/Dental School in Farmington, Connecticut. He has lectured and done research in many countries in Europe and Asia.


Dr. Glasel's scientific research has been in the fields of structural biochemistry, molecular immunology, pharmacology, and cell biology. Major portions of the research involved the structure and properties of water and aqueous solutions and on the structural chemistry and molecular biology of opiates and opiate peptides. He pioneered the uses of anti-morphine monoclonal antibodies and anti-opiate receptor anti-idiotypic antibodies in research on the cellular effects and actions of narcotics.

 

Dr. Glasel is co-editor and an author for the Academic Press textbook “Introduction to Biophysical Methods for Protein and Nucleic Acid Research” and many other contributed book chapters and original scientific research articles.

Dr. Glasel obtained a B.S. in chemistry and physics from Caltech. His Ph.D. from the University of Chicago was in chemical physics for work on chemical reactions on comets. He has served on active duty in the U.S. Air Force as a nuclear research officer.

 

Dennis Kunkel, PhD

 

Dr. Dennis Kunkel is an award-winning photomicrographer whose images appear worldwide in print, film, and electronic media. Kunkel has made significant contributions in the fields of botany and neurobiology, collaborated with researchers in zoology, microbiology, and materials science, and authored or co-authored 50 research papers in scientific journals.


His photos have appeared in Time magazine, Smithsonian, Scientific American, The New York Times, Popular Science, Prevention, Hippocrates, Science and Children, OMNI, GeoMundo, Biology of Microorganisms, ABC's of the Human Body, Industrial Photography, Life, Discovery, and National Geographic.

 

Wanda Phipatanakul, MD, MS

 

Dr. Wanda Phipatanakul is a board-certified pediatric allergist and immunologist, and assistant professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, where she oversees training for allergists, medical students, and pediatric residents. Phipatanakul is an attending physician at Boston Children's Hospital, and also serves as a chair for the Indoor Allergen Committee of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

 

Robert W. Powitz PhD, MPH, RS, DLAAS

 

Robert W. Powitz holds a Masters in Public Health, with a specialty in institutional practice, and a PhD in environmental health from the University of Minnesota. He is currently a Forensic Sanitarian in private practice, a contract instructor with NSF International and serves as part-time Health Director for three small rural towns in rural Connecticut. He is licensed and registered as a Sanitarian in several states.

 

For more than twelve years, he was the Director of Environmental Health and Safety at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan; where he continues to hold the academic rank of Adjunct Associate Professor in the College of Engineering. He also served as Biological Safety Officer for the United States Department of Agriculture.

 

Powitz was co-author of "Tools for Environmental Health", a regular column on portable instrumentation that appeared in the National Environmental Health Association's Journal of Environmental Health. He is currently Contributing Editor with Food Safety Magazine and writes regularly appearing columns in American Jails and Corrections Managers's Report.


Among his honors, Powitz was the recipient of the Walter F. Snyder, Davis Calvin Wagner and Harry R.H. Nicholas Awards. He is a Diplomate Laureate and past Chairman in the American Academy of Sanitarians. He holds Diplomate status with the American Board of Forensic Examiners; where he is also certified in Homeland Security.

 

Steve Robinson, MD

 

Dr. Steve Robinson is an Internal Medicine Physician, Hospitalist - specializing in the care of hospitalized patients - and member of the Infection Control Committee at St. Thomas Hospital, Nashville, Tennessee. He received his M.D. from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN.

 

Philip M. Tierno, Jr, PhD

 

Dr. Philip M. Tierno, Jr. is a well-known microbiologist with more than 35 years of experience in the field of Clinical and Medical Microbiology. He is the Director of Clinical Microbiology and Diagnostic Immunology at Tisch Hospital, New York University Medical Center, and is a part time Associate Professor, Departments of Microbiology and Pathology at the New York University School of Medicine and also at both the NYU College of Dentistry and the SUNY School of Optometry in New York City. He is a member of numerous respected scientific societies and did his graduate studies at the New York University, where he was awarded a M.S. degree in 1974 and his Ph.D. in 1977.

 

Dr. Tierno has acted as a consultant to the office of Attorney General of the New York State, the Department of Health of the City of New York, the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, and the College of American Pathologists. Dr. Tierno is a member of the NYC Mayor’s Task force on Bioterrorism & the NYC Medical Reserve Corps. Dr. Tierno has been recognized extensively for his numerous contributions to the medical/ scientific community. In 1986, he was bestowed the honor of Knighthood by The Sovereign Military and Hospitaler Order of Saint John Jerusalem, Knight of Malta. Since 1977, he has been recognized as a biographee in consecutive editions to date of "Who's Who in America; Who’s Who in the World; and Who’s Who in Science and Medicine" for his work in the field of Microbiology. In 2005 he was awarded the Il Leone de San Marco Award for lifelong achievement in Science and Medicine.

 

Dr. Tierno has done extensive research on the microbial ecology of the vaginal vault, and the microbiology and ecology of Toxic Shock Syndrome, as well as the Microbiology of AIDS patients. His primary areas of interest are Clinical & Environmental Microbiology and Microbial Ecology. He’s also extensively studied global perspectives on Infectious Diseases and national issues like Nosocomial Infection, in addition to the efficacy of germicidal agents on microbes. His work in the field of microbiology has resulted in numerous articles and texts that have been published in both medical and scientific journals and books, nationally and internationally. Articles written by Dr. Tierno have appeared in such journals as American Journal of Public Health, Journal of Clinical Microbiology, American Journal of Clinical Pathology, Lancet, Reviews of Infectious Diseases, JAMA, Journal of Infectious Diseases, etc, etc. He is co-editor of a popular environmental book, "Staying Healthy in a Risky Environment", 1993 Simon & Shuster, NY. He has recently authored a new book entitled “The Secret Life of Germs; Observations and Lessons from a Microbe Hunter” published by Pocket Books division of Simon & Schuster. His third book for the public was released in January 2002 “Protect Yourself Against Bioterriorism” also published by Pocket Books. Another book is “Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Terrorism: Emergency Response and Public Protection” (June 2003). In January 2004 he authored “The Secret Life of Germs: What They Are, Why We Need Them & How To Protect Ourselves Against Them” which was published by Atria Division of Simon & Schuster.

 

Dr. Tierno is Co-founder and President of the "Foundation for Scientific Research in the Public Interest" (a non-profit organization) whose primary objective is to fund scientific research for the public welfare and for which the usual and traditional sources of support are unavailable or encumbered, and he served as Chairman of the Environmental Commission of Norwood, New Jersey for 15 years. His broad expertise in the area of the environmental and medical microbiology and microbial ecology has resulted in numerous appearances on TV news, documentary, and investigative reports. He has appeared on both local, network and cable television shows such as 20/20, Oprah, Montel, Primetime, Dateline, Today, Good Morning America, CNN, etc, etc. He has been instrumental in enriching the career objectives of many physicians and scientists who were fortunate enough to have worked with him.

 

Bennett Weintraub, PhD

 

Dr. Weintraub’s Ph.D. is from the Department of Biology, University of California, San Diego, and he holds a B.S. in Life Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He has worked with researchers from Stanford University, Palo Alto CA, and the Biomedical Research Centre, University of British Columbia, Vancouver BC.


Publications include the Journal of Experimental Medicine, Immunology Today, Immunity, Infection and Immunity, Immunologic Research, Journal of Immunology, and others.

 

He performed biochemistry and immunology research at Stanford University and at the John Curtin School of Medical Research in Canberra, Australia. Dr. Weintraub co-founded BiotechTracker, an online tool for investors, and was senior scientific editor for the biology research journals Cell and Molecular Cell. Dr. Weintraub is currently Healthcare Research Principal at Reuters Insight in New York.

 

Michael Zuckerman, MD

 

Michael Zuckerman, M.D. is a NY-based OB/GYN, and Director of Medical Affairs for Anian Reuters Primary Research Division.
Dr. Zuckerman promotes awareness of health issues, identifies and develops relationships with key opinion leaders and experts, and develops consulting relationships with medical leaders to provide evidence based insights into healthcare research. He organizes, hosts and leads frequent medical educational conferences and is a member of several scientific advisory boards.
